This surgery consists of eliminating the excess, flaccid or damaged skin in the abdominal area below the navel. It is usually necessary after pregnancy or massive weight loss; the idea is to simultaneously correct the flaccidity that accompanies postpartum (internal muscular corset), as well as to eliminate those abnormal fat deposits that are altering the body contour, in the back, arms or legs; this can be achieved through a simultaneous procedure called lipolysis.

The ideal candidate is a patient who does not suffer from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, autoimmune diseases, uncontrolled hypertension, etc. In the case of maternal patients, they should be at least 3 months after having stopped breastfeeding.

The wound or incision to remove damaged or excess skin is made in the lower abdominal fold (lower abdominal groove), generally passing over scars from previous cesarean sections (to remove them). This cut is as long as the crease formed by the skin of the abdomen over the inguinal region, when we observe the patient in a sitting position. The length of this incision does not depend on the surgeon’s will.

For the “softening” of the fatty tissue, and to facilitate its extraction, in the process of molding by complementary lipolysis, waist, hip and back; different types of technical aids are used. If the preparation of these fatty deposits is performed by means of a beam of light, we speak of “laser-assisted lipolysis”. If, on the other hand, internal ultrasound is used, the procedure is called “vaser lipolysis”. Or if a handpiece is used that causes a weakening of the fat by means of an auxiliary device that induces a mechanical vibration of the adipose tissue and thus a “softening” of the adipose tissue, then this process is called “vibration-assisted lipolysis or vibroliposuction”.

Each patient may require the help of one of these particular techniques, or a combination of some of them. The aim is to obtain a better surgical result, shorten the duration and recovery time of the surgery, reduce inflammation and postoperative bleeding.

The elimination of excess fat tissue by surgery can be performed in patients of any age, over 18 years old and up to 65 years old.

Ideally, the surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Pain in this procedure is usually moderate, which in some patients may be greater, depending on their particular pain threshold. The need for immediate postoperative observation and adequate pain management make it a safer and more effective procedure if the patient remains in the clinic for the first day after surgery.

To aid in recovery, postoperative physiotherapy (external ultrasound, lymphatic drainage massage) is often used during the first 3 weeks. This therapy is provided by specialized personnel. During the same period, a Lycra postoperative medical support should be used; this support is better known as a postoperative girdle.

The incapacity to work should be between 3 days and a week, depending on the degree of inflammation and postoperative pain. Hematomas, although present in areas such as the waist, hips or legs, are not relevant during the recovery period.

As in any other surgical procedure, we start talking about final results between the 4th and 6th week after surgery. At that time we can go back to the gym, sunbathe or do intense outdoor activities.
