An ideal candidate for Lipolysis or body contouring surgery is a patient who is not obese and has good skin quality; ideally, he/she should not have stretch marks or significant flaccidity and, of course, should not suffer from conditions such as diabetes, autoimmune diseases, uncontrolled hypertension, etcetera.

Different types of technical aids are used to “soften” the fatty tissue and facilitate its removal. If the preparation for the removal of these fatty deposits is performed by means of a beam of light, we speak of “laser-assisted lipolysis”. If internal ultrasound is used, the procedure is called “vaser lipolysis”. Or if a handpiece is used to weaken the fat, with the help of an auxiliary device that induces a mechanical vibration of the adipose tissue and thus a “softening” of the adipose tissue, then we call such a procedure a “vibration assisted lipolysis or Vibroliposuction”.

A patient may require the help of one of these particular techniques, or the combination of some of them, to obtain better surgical results, shorten the duration of the surgery and the recovery period, decrease swelling and postoperative bleeding.

If it is also required, within the same surgery we can mold the gluteal region or moderately increase its volume, or correct some irregularity in this particular region. To do so, we perform a fat transfer, extracted from the same patient, to the gluteal area. This procedure is known as gluteal lipoinjection.
The removal of excess fatty tissue by surgery can be performed on patients from 18 to 60 years of age.

Ideally, the surgery should be performed under general anesthesia. Patients may experience moderate pain, which may be greater in some, depending on their threshold for this particular pain. The need for immediate postoperative observation and adequate pain management makes it a safer and more effective procedure if the patient remains hospitalized for only one day after surgery.
Postoperative physiotherapy (external ultrasound, lymphatic drainage massage) is often used to aid recovery. It is recommended during the first 3 weeks after surgery and is performed by specialized personnel. During the same period a lycra-based postoperative medical support should be used; this support is also known as a postoperative girdle.

The time off work should be between 3 days and a week, depending on the degree of swelling and postoperative pain. Bruising, although present in areas such as the waist, hips or legs, is normal as part of the recovery period.

As in any other surgical procedure, we start talking about final results between the 4th and 6th week after surgery. At that time we can return to the gym, sunbathe or perform intense outdoor activities.
